  • Takes longer to start the engine when you turn the key/push the button
  • Dimming headlights
  • More frequent need for engine revving or jump-starts
  • Unusual power fluctuations

Causes of Car Battery Deterioration

  • Excessive Jump Starts: Jump starting a car is a great way to revive a battery that has died but can still hold a charge. That said, jump starting — especially when done excessively — can cause a car battery to deteriorate.
  • Vibrations: If your battery’s hold-down clamps are loose, or you drive over rough roads frequently, the associated vibrations can cause the insides of your battery to deteriorate.
  • Heat: Hot weather causes the evaporation of liquids inside a car battery. As such, cars from hotter climates generally have batteries that last less time.
  • Time: A car battery can only go through so many charge cycles. As such, your car battery will eventually need to be replaced no matter what.

How to Test a Car Battery Yourself in San Jose

Our customers often ask us how they can perform their own DIY battery tests. While we offer free battery tests in most cases here at Del Grande Dealer Group and see no reason not to bring your vehicle to us for the ultimate convenience, here are a few ways veteran pros can test their own batteries.

Do The Headlight Test:

This test, while not as accurate as the digital multimeter method, is more easily performed by doing the following:

  1. Turn on the engine, keep the car in park, and make sure the headlights are on.
  2. Rev the engine and see if the headlight brightness changes.
  3. If the headlights get brighter, that means the current is not strong enough to keep the lights at normal brightness while the car is idling.
  4. Take your car to a service center at this point for further assessment.

Use a Digital Multimeter:

Note: you’ll want a buddy along with you to conduct this test. Here’s what to do:

  1. Set the voltmeter to 20 DC volts.
  2. Under the hood, touch the negative terminal (black) with the negative meter probe (also black).
  3. Touch the positive terminal (red) with the positive meter probe (also red)
  4. Have someone else turn on the headlights and check the voltmeter reading.
  5. At 80℉, 12.5 volts or higher means your battery is fully charged. 12.3 volts means it’s at about 75% charged.11.8 volts or lower means you have 25% or less charge.

How Much is a Replacement Car Battery?

Exactly how much is a replacement car battery? Well, that depends on what kind of battery your car utilizes! Most often, car batteries cost anywhere from $75-$200 depending on whether or not it’s a premium battery.

One notable exception is Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid car batteries. They typically cost far more — usually between $1,000 to $6,000. That’s because they have a much larger job to do than standard gasoline car batteries. Remember: this is often offset by the much lower gas consumption and higher efficiency that you enjoy with a hybrid.
